What Does EWG Verified Actually Mean for Skincare Ingredients?
Compartir
Quick answer: EWG Verified® means a product has passed the Environmental Working Group's strictest standard for personal care. It contains none of EWG's "unacceptable" ingredients, it scores green (1–2) in the Skin Deep® database, and it lists every ingredient on the label, fragrance included. The brand also has to follow documented good manufacturing practices.

When I started formulating for my own reactive skin, "clean" was on every label and meant almost nothing. There's no legal definition for it. That's why I put two of our serums through EWG Verified. It's one of the few clean-beauty marks with published criteria you can check yourself.
What does EWG Verified actually require?
According to EWG's published criteria for personal care products, a verified product must meet all of these:
- No "unacceptable" ingredients. EWG keeps a list of ingredients with health, ecotoxicity, or contamination concerns. Any one of them disqualifies a product.
- Restricted ingredients need proof. Some ingredients are allowed only with paperwork, such as certificates of analysis, showing they meet concentration or purity limits.
- A green Skin Deep® score (1 or 2). The product has to land in the lowest-concern range of EWG's 1–10 scale.
- Full ingredient disclosure. Ingredients must use standard INCI names, and fragrance components have to be disclosed. "Fragrance" can't be used to hide a blend.
- Allergen labeling. In leave-on products, 26 known fragrance allergens must be listed when present above 0.001%.
- Contaminant limits for botanicals. Plant ingredients must test below set limits for heavy metals (10 ppm lead, 3 ppm arsenic and cadmium, 1 ppm mercury) and pesticides.
- Good manufacturing practices. The brand needs a documented quality program covering supplier compliance, worker safety, and how it handles complaints and adverse reactions.
EWG Verified vs. "clean" vs. a Skin Deep rating: what's the difference?
| "Clean" on a label | Skin Deep® score | EWG Verified® | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Legal or published definition | No | Yes (hazard rating) | Yes (licensing criteria) |
| Bans a set list of ingredients | Varies by brand | No, it's a score | Yes |
| Requires full fragrance disclosure | No | No | Yes |
| Contaminant testing for botanicals | No | No | Yes |
| Manufacturing-practice review | No | No | Yes |
What EWG Verified does not mean
- It isn't a promise you won't react. Sensitive skin can react to gentle, well-made ingredients too, including plant oils. Patch-test anything new.
- It isn't an efficacy test. Verification covers ingredient safety and transparency. It doesn't test whether a serum smooths lines or calms redness.
- It isn't the same as organic or cruelty-free. Those are separate certifications. Oyu Botanica is also Leaping Bunny certified.
Is EWG Verified skincare worth the extra cost?
If you have reactive skin and you're tired of decoding labels, it saves you real research time. Someone else has already checked the ingredient list, the fragrance, and the contaminant testing. Price depends on the formula more than the mark. Our EWG Verified Sensitive Skin Booster Serum is $35.99 and our Bakuchiol Firming Serum is $39.99.
How to patch-test an EWG Verified product
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends these steps:
- Pick a quarter-sized spot where the product won't rub off, like the underside of your arm or the bend of your elbow.
- Apply it twice a day for 7 to 10 days.
- If there's no redness, itching, or swelling, it's reasonable to use it on your face.
- If you do react, wash it off gently and stop using it.
FAQ
Is EWG Verified the same as a good Skin Deep score?
No. A green Skin Deep score is one requirement. Verification adds a banned-ingredient list, full fragrance disclosure, contaminant testing, and a manufacturing-practice review.
Can an EWG Verified product still irritate sensitive skin?
Yes. Verification screens out ingredients of concern, but individual reactions still happen. Patch-test for 7–10 days first.
Which Oyu Botanica products are EWG Verified?
Our Sensitive Skin Booster Serum and our Bakuchiol Firming Serum are both EWG Verified.
Can I return an opened product if I react to it?
Under our current refund policy, personal care products aren't returnable. That's why we recommend patch-testing before you apply a new product to your face.
