Rooted in Heritage, Refined by Science: Celebrating AAPI Month in the Oyu Botanica Lab

May is always a deeply reflective time for me. As Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month comes to a close, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it truly means to carry my roots forward.

When people see me in the lab—surrounded by glass beakers, digital scales, and active botanicals—they see the modern science of skincare. But if you look a little closer at the formulations bubbling inside those containers, you’ll find something much older: my Mongolian heritage.

Building Oyu Botanica wasn't just about launching a clean beauty brand; it was about honoring the ancestral wisdom I grew up with and translating it into high-performance, modern rituals for radiant skin.

The Intersection of Memory and Chemistry

Growing up, I learned early on that nature holds the answers to balance, resilience, and healing. In Mongolia, the relationship with the earth is one of deep respect and reciprocity. The plants that survive the region's harsh, extreme climates are naturally incredibly resilient, packed with potent nutrients to protect themselves—and ultimately, to protect our skin.

When I am formulating today, I bridge those two worlds:

  • Ancestral Wisdom: Honoring the time-tested, nutrient-rich plant-based philosophies passed down through generations.

  • Modern Innovation: Utilizing clean, cutting-edge actives like bakuchiol to deliver gentle yet incredibly effective results.

Formulating isn't just a clinical process for me; it’s a creative and spiritual ritual. Every small batch we create is a physical manifestation of my heritage, refined by modern cosmetic science.

"We purposefully choose to create in small batches because your skin deserves that level of freshness, precision, and intention."

Why Small-Batch Intention Matters

In a world dominated by mass production, fast beauty, and synthetic shortcuts, staying true to an authentic, small-batch process is an act of resistance.

For Oyu Botanica, small batches mean:

  1. Uncompromised Freshness: The plant-based actives retain their maximum potency when they hit your vanity.

  2. Absolute Quality Control: I personally oversee the precision of our formulations, ensuring that what goes on your face is safe, health-conscious, and beautiful.

  3. Sustainable Footprint: We only make what is needed, minimizing waste and honoring the earth that provided the ingredients in the first place.

Honoring Our Roots Every Single Day

While AAPI Heritage Month gives us a dedicated space to celebrate our diverse cultures, stories, and contributions, for diverse founders, this isn't a thirty-day trend—it’s our life’s work. Every time you use an Oyu Botanica product, you are supporting a broader vision of beauty. One that values cultural heritage, celebrates clean chemistry, and believes that skincare should be a mindful, nurturing ritual rather than a chore.

Thank you for allowing me to share a piece of my heritage with your daily skincare ritual. Here’s to glowing, resilient skin rooted in history and backed by science.
